Improve your vessel efficiency with real-time monitoring and analysis of used lubricants. In Norway, the system is distributed by MHService which have offices in Måløy and Ålesund.
Stena Line has installed the new digital system on three of their vessels operating in the Irish Sea, and the system has already been proven to be highly cost-effective:
– It has delivered impressive results for our vessels, reports Michael Thomson, Vessel Superintendent at Stena Line.
The new solution was launched in the Norwegian market by our member MHService. The system performs continuous quality measurements of the lubricant circulating in the machines, eliminating the need to send oil samples for testing and wait days or weeks for results.
– Now we don’t have to wait for postal deliveries because the system always gives us full control. It has already delivered impressive results for our vessels and has already averted two major incidents by providing immediate alerts that could have led to costly repairs, says Thompson.
What is Castrol SmartMonitor?
Castrol SmartMonitor is a new technical service that combines the power of IoT technology with Castrol’s engineering expertise. By installing sensors directly on critical equipment such as engines, thrusters, shafts and hydraulic systems, Castrol SmartMonitor captures, processes and displays real-time data about lubricant condition and performance.
According to Gaute Vorren, CEO of MHService, customers have responded positively to the system, particularly larger vessels.
– This product solves a significant problem effectively, saving customers from manually collecting lubricant samples and waiting for results, Vorren explains.
Unlike traditional used oil analysis (UOA), which relies on samples collected up to six weeks before testing, Castrol SmartMonitor provides real-time data with a feedback loop of just 15 minutes.
– This significantly enhances safety, timing and logistical efficiency for maritime operations. The dashboard allows shore-based personnel to access the same quality metrics as onboard crew, providing an additional layer of oversight, Vorren continues.
The examples from Stena Line confirm my optimism for this system. I believe it can revolutionize the shipping industry, reduce accidents, and support the green transition, says Oddvar Strand, Director at MHService.
Has woken a lot of interest
MHService is now working on implementing the Castrol SmartMonitor in the Norwegian market and the system woke a lot of interest at Nor Fishing in Trondheim earlier this year. Together with Måløy Maritime Group, customers will have the opportunity to see the system in action with a demonstration at DanFish International in October 2025.
The company supplies fuel and lubricant solutions to both maritime and land-based customers. MHService strives to be a complete provider for the maritime industry, and a very important part of Måløy Maritime Group.
